Silence. It was dark. The sounds of combat echoed around her. She breathed in and moved the rifle slowly. A group of soldiers walked through the street of the bombed out city. One of them wore the uniform of a Luclistani officer. She centered the rifle on him and held her breath. The rifle barked and the officer dropped, missing a large chunk of his head. She lay still as the soldiers scrambled for cover. They were in a panicked frenzy. As soon as they managed to find cover she found one she could see and the rifle barked again, causing the soldier to scream and writhe in pain. His knee was gone. She lay in wait, rifle still aimed at the soldier. His screams carried far, even over the explosions of the mortars. Eventually he lay still, either dead or unconscious, it didn't matter which. She had the entire enemy squad pinned down. No one was willing to move, for fear of being picked off. They seemed willing to stay hunkered down. She slowly reached over and picked up her two-way radio. "Sylvia Rouge. Requesting mortar strike. Coordinates..." After she got the confirmation she lowered the radio and watched. Then the soldiers disappeared as mortar shells dropped on them. Through the smoke she saw a body moving, attempting to flee. She aimed and it barked once more, and the shape jerked and fell. She picked up the radio once more. "Sylvia Rouge. Central Plaza secure. Repositioning to coordinates..." She packed up her rifle and radio and snuck through the wreckage. The city was in shambles. Piles of rubble were everywhere. She climbed over the rubble, holding a pistol and froze as she heard voices.
The damned Eoni have snipers everywhere. We should have killed them all while we had the chance.
Not all of them. Some of them are useful and know their place.
She held her breath as the soldiers walked past. As they walked by she let out a breath and shifted her wait, causing a few rocks to shift, sending them rolling down the hill.
Hold it. The bitch hears something.
She froze. That could only mean one thing. Shit. She held the pistol tightly and held her breath, hoping nothing would happen.
Over there!
Well shit. She readied her pistol. She heard the soldier approaching. The crunch of his boots. She laid still as his head peaked over. It looked left and then right and she saw the moment he saw her. She squeezed the trigger and he collapsed. She heard the yelling as the other soldiers approached. The soldier's sub-machine gun had slid down and was within arms reach. She grabbed it and as the first soldier appeared above the rocks she fired. He ducked back down and then a stick flew over. She rolled away as it exploded, causing the world to ring. She shuffled forward and shot over the pile, hearing the screams of pain. She than sprung up and shot the last two soldiers, causing them to drop their weapons. She moved towards the writhing soldiers.
Stay back!
She looked up and saw a young Eoni holding a pistol at her. She paused and then attempted to move again.
If you come any closer I'll shoot!
She held her hands up. "Calm down. Put down the gun ok?" She could see him shaking. She held out a hand towards him. "You don't have to do this."
Stay away from them! I know what you people do!
"It's ok. I'm one of the good guys. We're going to make you safe ok?"
No you're going to kill all of us! You're a traitor!
"No, you're going to be fine, it's going to be ok." At this point the soldiers had stopped making noises. She attempted to move closer to the shaking Eoni.
If you take one more step, I'll shoot.
"Ok ok." She stopped. "Look. I don't know what they told you, but we're not the bad guys. Look see?" She slowly placed her gun on the floor. "I'm friendly."
You're not going to kill me?
"Of course not, pups like you are the reason we're fighting." He slowly lowered the pistol and she breathed a sigh of relief. She started to move towards him. He then quickly raised the gun.
I'm sorry.
