It is a normal day in Miklasgrad, the capital of Jzegrad. The city, boasting a population of about 8.6 million, is also home to one of the lowest per capita crime rates in all of Lusatia. This is largely due to the efficacy of the city's police department, the MPD. Maintaining order in the city through a combination of carrot and stick, the progressive policies of the city's administration has ensured that the police force is both fair and well-funded. Of particular note is the city's adoption of modern forensic crime investigations, which has skyrocketed the amount of resolved murder cases in the city, earning commendation from the national government.
Today, however, a new challenger approaches, one whose crimes would shock the city to its core...

Lukas approached the house he had been called to, some brick townhouse design from the building spree back in the 1880s. The neighborhood was one of the nicer ones, which itself as the first of many oddities he figured he'd be encountering in this case. As he approached the front door, a deputy on guard nodded and let him inside. The first thing the detective noted as he entered the front hallway was the stench of death emanating from the living room to his left. Looking inside, he saw three officers, two looking around the room and dusting for fingerprints, a third hunched over the reason for his visit: a dead man, covered in blood. The officer, noticing Lukas's entry, stood up and waited for him to approach before speaking, "Detective Mačiulis, thank you for getting here as soon as you have. Let me catch you up to speed."
The officer, whose badge read "Chmura," explained the facts. The dead man was millionaire Aksel Langstrom, a grandson of Grinvellian immigrants and CEO of Langstrom Industries. Though the coroner was on his way, the call that caused the police to investigate had came that morning after Langstrom had not shown up in his office for two days in a row, and from the signs of early decay, Langstrom had been dead for a few days already. Relating to his manner of death...
"His neck shows signs of strangulation, which could be the cause of death, but obviously what stands out is-"
"Twenty-eight stab wounds," Lukas noted, taking a swig of his flask of vodka, "Didn't want to leave him a chance, huh?"
"Right, He's also missing his left ear, but otherwise, there's little sign of a scuffle in the room itself, and no sign of a break-in. Whoever did this was invited in and was trusted enough by Langstrom that he left his guard down."
"Easy there, Corporal Chmura, putting together the puzzle is my job. Anything missing in the house?"
"So far, nothing that we can tell. None of the other properties in the city show any signs of break-in or missing items otherwise, and the few people we've talked to so far - the immediate neighbors, and a few of the higher-level staff at Langstrom Industries - report nothing unusual about Langstrom's behavior."
Lukas raised his brow at this. All this action was faster than usual for the MPD. The police corporal noticed Lukas's implicit inquiry and explained, "We figured there'd be pressure on us to solve this one, given how wealthy Langstrom was: nearly $150 million Zloty, if I recall the headlines from a week ago."
"And yet, none of Langstrom's wealth is missing, which limits the types of motive the attacker could have. Keep looking around for now, and investigate any individuals Langstrom normally visits or has visit, especially any romantic liasons."
"What do you mean, detective?"
"Look around, Corporal, there's plenty of photographs of Langstrom and his parents in this room and the hallway, but not a single one of him with a partner. A man like him can afford to not sleep alone, and it would explain any visitors to Langstrom's house not being unusual."
Lukas took another sip of his vodka. "I'm going to head to the central station and give the chief a briefing regarding the situation. Send all the evidence you collect here to my office. We'll find the creep who did this before too long. Someone who pulled off a murder this violent is going to stick out like a sore thumb - there's no way he hasn't taken leave of his senses."
