The bus would pull up to the gate of 'Path Kethona' Martian Military Institute, the air dry and cold. Stepping off of the bus first would be a soldier wearing plain grey, while another would step out from the guard shack, and check a small plastic card stamped with letters and a number. He'd then hand it back, and open the gate, before then a moment later, a Kithium woman with red fur and grey hair would step off of the bus, and take a deep breath.
"Everyone out, get off the bus. Now!"
One by one the recruits exit, forced to form a single-file line.

As the recruits would file off of the bus, the Kithium woman would draw what looked like a baton, marked with a red stripe over its length that ran up to the handle. She would make everyone who got off of the bus line up into a single file line, batting two who didn't move quick enough as she did, and then forcing the others fully into line and ordering them to stop fidgeting. After a moment, the gate to the complex would open, and she would turn and point to the front gate.
"You will march in a single file line behind me to the assembly area, and stay in this line the entire time. The white line on the asphalt-" She would use her baton to point down at the white strip that led all the way into the base, "is for you worthless pieces of sapient garbage who can't follow a group without the extra help. If you stray, I will baton you. Understood? Good."
She would step in front of the line, and gesture with the baton. "Forward March!"
Two more drill instructors would step out from the side of the bus with batons, standing at either side of the group, guiding them in. Anyone who stepped out of line would receive a smack to the thigh. They would be led along the asphalt path until they had reached what looked like a large parade ground, and then they would be lined up.
"Company, Attention!" The Kithium would order. She had hoped that 'Attention' would have actually been taught to them before they were shipped from the recruiting center. If not, she would be using her baton an awful lot.

Sinclair hesitated slightly at the commands given to him, he was nervous and stumbling embarrassingly around. He did the best he could to follow and keep up but all his mind could focus on was the fight he had with his father.
---last week---
"You must be out of your fucking mind lad, why would you join the Army? We have a spot on the boat fer ya." Harold Sinclair was frustrated, angry but most of all scared. His only son was about to be sent to basic in a foreign army, he and Gavin both came to Roskana to escape the pain of losing his wife, just being in Ulster-Gaelia made Harold think of her so he took up an opportunity to fish within the trade treaty. He had made an honest life in the last few months earning money to buy an apartment and keep his boat running, but he and Gavin weren't citizens, they lacked access to certain benefits which drew ire from his son who was used to the privilege of being a UKUG citizen. He wanted more and he wanted to earn citizenship for his father.
"I'll be fine dad, a couple years in the army and I'll have a head start compared to just working the boat." Harold didn't like hearing his son argue with him, but there was no point, Gavin had already completed the necessary paperwork and was leaving soon. "Just promise you'll be safe boy and honor yourself, you're a Sinclair, see through to your commitment." Harold walked over to hug his son, "And come home, at the end of it all just come back." Gavin hugged his father back knowing it had to hurt, losing his wife and now his son was leaving. "I'll make you proud dad."
---present day---
The call for attention received a delayed reaction from Gavin who was thinking of his father, he stood attention but knew the Kithium saw him lag.

She would slap a person who did not move fast enough with a baton in the thigh. "Feet together! Move faster, Guppy." Soon, The Kithium would walk over to him, twirling the baton as she eyed him with what could be visibly said to be 'disgust'. "What is your name, Guppy?" She'd ask him, speaking loudly.

Carson hustled along with the rest of the group, gritting his teeth at the shouts. But though he could follow the first set of orders, he started at the impact of the baton against his thigh when he glanced over the shoulder of another recruit ahead. Wincing, he joined the rest of the column with his bookbag gripped tightly between his arms.
Even as they reached the parade ground and the young man snapped to attention, he stood out as a thin, spindly figure whose clothes seemed to hang on him a size too big. He was already sweating regardless of the sun's condition on the recruits and looked like he'd been raised indoors his whole life- pale as a skeleton.
"You're not gonna survive conscription like this, Carson," the inselni murmured as they wrapped his skinned hand with linen.
He wiped the tears out of his eyes with his tears. "Why do I have to join the army when I'm older anyway? I can't even deal with a bunch of kids taking my lunch!"
"Because that's how things are done here," the inselni replied simply, tying the bandage closed. "You are Roskanan, and Roskanans are a martial people. You will follow that tradition."
"Why? Why can't I just come with you to Elenria?" Carson protested, his face flush with anger. "Is it because you don't care about me?"
He'd hit a nerve. Sorrow flashed across the inselni's face before he shook his head. "Go to your room, Carson."
"You just want to not have to worry about me anymore, is that it?" Carson, snapped to his feet and stormed off in the direction of his room. The inselni stared after him, snorting a jet of smoke.
"You don't understand." they snapped. "I can't. Elenria isn't a good place."
"Then you should burn that boat ticket for Franerre, shouldn't you!" Carson retorted, slamming the door.

Another instructor, a Festria would step over to him, and physically have to bend over. The faint scent of strawberries every Festria carried was absent, replaced by a chemical odor that smelled like a sort of soap, but not one scented with anything positive, just a cleaning agent that stuck to the fur. He stared him in the eyes for a moment, looking as though he might hit him with the baton for fun, before he would look Carson dead in the eyes.
"What is your name, Guppy?" He asked them.

She would eye him, and then after a moment, shake her head. "Guppies." She walks down the line.
