“Stand clear!”
…
“Ready?”
“Yessir.”
“SAFETY OFF!”
“Charge good!”
“ENGAGING!”

“Everyone okay?!”

“Yessir!”
“I’m okay!”
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
“All good back here!”
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
“Sir!”
rrrr
“What?”
“Look! Light!”
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
“Well I’ll be…”
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
A hole. A single hole the size of a small rock, but a hole nonetheless. The faint light of sunlight pours into the dark abyss the crew has been slaving away inside of.
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
“Sir! That means we’re almost there!”
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
The young worker rushed towards the opening in the rock. The moist mixture of dirt, rock, cold mud, and snowflakes rough on his inexperienced palms as his two hands make contact with the still warm, freshly blasted wall.
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
The small dopamine rush would quickly be replaced with fear as the foreman’s voice lashed at the air.
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRR
“GET BACK UNDER THE SUPPORTS.”
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrRRRRR
The worker’s hands left the wall a moment too late. Their head turned to face the onlooking crew only to feel a sudden sharp pain pierce his arm behind his vision.
Pain wracked up his arms and into his back. His spine would feel a pinch before his lower body became useless. He wouldn’t have to register the horrified expressions of the crew before a single hit to the back of the head blinded him. Not a moment later, his body was on the ground, a strong weight pushing him down. His breathing sharpened, but only dust filled his lungs. His exhale was sputtering, the taste of iron filling his mouth. Pain seared through his skull as if a boot was standing on him. crunch
The rocks eventually came to a stop. A hole. A single hole the size of a boulder, made at the expense of a worker.
It would take two hours of manually digging with a pickaxe and shovel to uncover the body finally.
Another worker loaded his mangled corpse onto the top of a rock-loaded minecart, the team of haulers pushing the several loaded cars back through the tunnel. The heavy equipment could be brought in with the body cleared to finish the dig. The work crew would huddle up inside the tunnel, taking refuge in an access hole as the large opening allows the cool, whipping mountain air to blow in. A secondary crew, bundled better, was riding the bore slowly through the tunnel, the small engine behind it chugging along with an attached passenger car to warm the other crew.
The ones on the bore would happily chat under the faint lamplight, though they’d fall silent as they’d pass the small electric motor train passing them, the bloodied, mangled corpse left exposed on the back for them all to see.
Several minutes would pass before it finally arrived, the end of the longest Tunnel in Ouhiri almost complete. The crew would disembark, motioning for the original team to hide away in the passenger car.
The bore would work its magic throughout the night, digging through the remaining rock and placing new supports to prevent the tunnel from caving in. Behind, workers would nail the rails into place after they’re placed down, the locomotive and the passenger resting several feet behind the working crew.
The bore lurched forward, surprising all of the crew. The loud growl of the drill’s teeth would silence as the bore pushed forward. That’s when it became clear.
They had finished the tunnel to the Tyniti Canyon. The snowy, jagged mountain pass that has for so long prevented the direct Galran railroad was now within the Koian's realm of possibility.
