Lieutenant Sergiy Kravtsov of the Mizran' Gendarmerie Department sat at the dining table in his apartment, thinking over his last assignment. A successful bust of a gang in the city that culminated in the arrest of the gang's leader earlier this day has given him much to boast about to his girlfriend, who, in turn, was not really impressed. Their relationship was a strenuous one. While they loved each other, and were even considering to finally marry, Natalka really hated Sergiy's work. Not only it was dangerous, where he constantly ran the risk of catching a bullet or a knife, he spent much more time at work that he did with her. Constantly on call, there were a number of romantic dinners cut short because duty called. Even now, he just came home from the sudden call on the weekend, and Natalka was once again mad, almost throwing things as she shouted at him. His mind, however, drifted to work.
At work things were also not the best. Sergiy, while being a brilliant investigator and an efficient cop, was known in the department to flagrantly disregard a number of protocols. This wasn't much of an issue, for his department Chief looked the other way, as Sergiy's unorthodox conduct did, in fact, yield results. Lieutenant Kravrtsov's name was on many manila folders in the "Solved Cases" section of the archive. But this has changed recently. The old Chief he was on good relations with has retired, and a bigshot from the capital came to replace him. The new Chief, a protocol hardliner, who used to serve in the Kyograd Upper District Precinct was of minor nobility by birth, so not only was Kravtsov's insolence angering him as his superior as a Gendarme, but also his as superior as a noble.
Suddenly, the ring of a phone snapped Sergiy out of his thoughts. Being a Gendarme Lieutenant in a large city's police department, he was lucky enough to count himself in the minority of people who had a phone.
"Don't you dare!" Natalka said angrily, pointing the knife she was cutting fruits with at Sergiy, as he began reaching for the phone.
"You know they don't call me if it isn't important, Sergiy replied."
"It's always "important"", she snapped back, anger growing in her eyes.
After a second of consideration, and another round of the phone bell's ring, he picked up the handset.
"Unbelievable," Natalka spitted out, as she threw the knife at the counter, quickly wiped her hands on the towel, which she promptly threw on the floor, before storming out of the kitchen.
Sergiy watched her leave, with a note of sadness in his eyes. But there was nothing he could do at the moment. "Kravtsov speaking," he said, as he brought the handset to his ear.
"Sergiy," a familiar voice rang out of the speaker in the earpiece. It was his partner, and close friend, Sergeant Mykolai Grabarov. "The Chief is demanding you come in for a meeting as fast as you can. I don't know what's wrong, but he seemed angry."
Exchanging a few more sentences with his friend, Sergiy put the phone down and went into the room. Natalka was sitting on the couch, legs crossed and hand propping up her chin, looking out the window.
"I'm sorry dear," he began, as he took of his regular shirt and started putting on his uniform that he pulled out the closet. "They're calling me in again. It's probably about the gang we busted earlier today. I promise I'll be back in no time."
Natlaka ignored him. The silent treatment, one that hurt Sergiy the most. And she knew that. She had enough.
"I'll bring back dinner!" Sergiy said, in a final attempt to get Natalka to say at least something. Seeing no reaction from her, he closed the door behind him as he left the apartment.
