(Background: staol.proboards.com/thread/1201/development-ashinaran-military-reorganization)
Ashinaran diplomats sent out messages to all the members of the new alliances they just founded together couple months ago, offering a joint weapons program, arguing that unifying military equipment between alliance members would greatly simplify logistics in any future joint operations.
Besides said offer, Ashinarans would also bring to the table brand new prototypes of machine guns.
The new guns, for now referred to as Prototype X-1, X-2 and X-3, are all designed in the most common caliber used in SATO - the Ulster-Gaelian 7.62×63mmR (or 30-06, as some of the nations refer to it as).
First, the X-1. The design is inspired by the ZiX machine gun that Ulster-Gaelia sold to Ashinara during the Tafatu war - although internally they're nothing alike.
The gun is designed to be a versatile Light Machine Gun for the infantry that could be used in all conditions - from temperate climates of UKUG and Northern Touli, to frigid cold of Mil'Nor, to humid jungles of Ashinara, to hot and dusty deserts of Granuras and Southern Reseria. It has a manual dust cover on the magazine opening. More interestingly, it has an automatic dust cover on the ejection port - it is constantly being closed by a spring, and opened automatically by the shell ejection mechanism with every cycling of the bolt. The charging handle is non-reciprocating, and itself is a dust cover - it only opens up a slit in the action when the charging handle is pulled back to charge the bolt. The gun has spring-loaded firing pin and fires from an open bolt. It has a simple safety switch with only SAFE and FIRE options - the selection between semi-auto fire and full-auto fire is made with a two-finger trigger - the top half of the trigger has a separate trigger inside it that produces a single shot, while pulling the entire trigger by the bottom half fires the gun in full-auto. The sight is an aperture, adjustable from 100 to 600 meters. All of the gun's manipulation tools - charging handle, sight adjustment and ejection port - are on the left side, allowing the shooter to never let his right hand let go of the grip while firing. More importantly, the shells eject to the left and at an angle to the front of the gun, allowing for a gun assistant to be on the left side of the gun without getting hit in the face by spent cartridges. The magazine release lever is large, allowing for a spent magazine to easily be pushed out by engaging the release lever with the palm of one's hand and pushing the magazine with one's fingers. Finally - the quick-change barrel. To unlock the barrel, one would need to undo a simple latch located at the front end of the receiver, then simply pull the barrel out by the carry handle, before inserting a new barrel and closing the latch. What's more, 2 barrels were designed - a regular and a finned one. The regular barrel was lighter, but the finned barrel traded that off for being able to put more rounds through it before being overheated. Pictured is the finned version, and it is the version favored by Ashinarans. The gas block could be adjusted to change the fire rate from around 400 RPM to a maximum of 700. The gun is equipped with a bipod, but also has attachment points for tripods.
X-1
Mass - 25 pounds (regular barrel, loaded) or 30 pounds (finned barrel, loaded)
Length - 45.5 inches
Barrel length - 25 inches
Cartridge: UKUG 7.62x63 MMR
Action: gas-operated tilting bolt
Rate of fire: adjustable between 400 and 700; Practical Rate of fire - 120
Effective firing range: 600 meters
Maximum firing range: 1,650 meters.
Feed system: top-loaded box magazine.
Barrel service life under sustained fire - 1,000 rounds for regular barrel; 3,000 for finned barrel
X-2 is a very simple modification on the X-1. The bipod is removed entirely, requiring a tripod or a vehicle attachment. A small adapter plate is put in place of the magazine dust cover, and most importantly - a 100 round drum magazine. The standard 30 round box magazine could still be used with this version, however. It is suggested that this version be used on light vehicles, as well as in anti-aircraft role. Besides that, the X-2 is essentially the same gun as the X-1.
X-3 is a much more substantial modification. It shares the same receiver frame with the X-1 and X-2, but the front half is entirely different. The gas system differs slightly, and a much heavier finned barrel is used. This raises the weight to 47 pounds, however it would allow significantly more rounds to be passed through the barrel under sustained fire before needing to change it - estimated to be around 6,000-10,000. The gas block is slightly different and requires a tool to adjust it, unlike the X-1 and X-2, but could be adjusted between 400 and 900 rounds per minute. The 100 round magazine is the standard option for it, though just like with the X-2, the 30 round box magazine is still compatible. It is suggested that this version be used for stationary defensive emplacements and more importantly - in tanks. While it hasn't been finished yet, Ashinaran engineers are also working on an armored encasement for mounting this gun into tanks, as well as a telescopic sight. For the reasons of this gun's weight, and intended purpose, it does not come with a bipod.
Should the gun be adopted into service, Ashinarans plan to designate it with the Ashinaran pronunciation of the Commons term for machine gun - Mashin-Hver, Model 1934, or simply: MG-34.
