Queen Yuzura was in her private study, thinking over what she could do next to improve her nation. There was one thing that was bugging her - especially now that she - a woman - has been given near total control of the entire country.
Discrimination between the genders was never an issue in Ashinara. Or, at least, it wasn't one that's discussed. Not one that's legislated. If anything, the genders were equal, if you think about it in a roundabout type of way. While men were free to choose their careers and what they'd do with their lives, just about the only choice women had was whom to marry - however, this was offset by the fact that while the men were off doing whatever they were doing, it were the women who controlled the entirety of the household - from what would be eaten that day, to the finances - and it even would be the mother that would give a potential suitor the blessing to marry her daughter - not the father.
There have, of course, been a few women in Ashinara who have broken that mold. General of the Army and Chief of Staff, Sonya Petliura, was a very good example of that. Hell, the Queen herself - although that was probably more of just pure luck - should she have had any brothers, she would've been passed over in the line of succession.
Yuzura thought of beginning her path of transforming this particular aspect of the culture in one fairly small, insignificant action that was bound to send a fairly big, significant message. After a meeting with Petliura, requesting she finds someone fitting the Queen's requirements, it took several weeks for the General to find that special someone.
Lieutenant Maria Soloveiko was one of the less than a dozen women in the Royal Cavalry - and one of the only two officers there. She had served under the now national hero, both in official title and popular fame, Captain Dirka, in the Tafatu War of '31. She was there during the final charge at the UST war camp at Le Troi. Before her service in the Cavalry, she had served in the Infantry, and transferred to the Cavalry by the time she was a Sergeant.
Unfortunately for the Royal Cavalry, they were about to loose one of their only 2 female officers, as Soloveiko was summoned to the Royal Palace, where she has been promoted to Captain personally by the Queen herself, and assigned head of the Royal Guard.
The first task that newly promoted Captain Soloveiko would get is to begin seeking, recruiting and training promising women to replace all the Guards, and make the Royal Guards an exclusively female unit. This, of course, would have to be done in secret, for now, to not instantly loose the loyalty of the current guards, who would slowly be "retired" for one reason or another.
