Governor General Sigismund Walecha was done. The elections had come and gone and the liberals were the dominant party in government. As such he was once again submitting his resignation, which he had been doing for the past several months. However this time was different. This time he also informed the government that even if they did not appoint a replacement he intended to step down from the post and leave it vacant. He was done with dealing with the insanity of colonial politics. While they were not breaking any laws, the landowners made it next to impossible for him to do anything but collect the bare minimum taxes. They had successfully co-opted the colonial charter to halt almost all mining operations and as of right now all he did was constantly field complaints from industrialists that the islands were not properly industrialized. So he felt a great sense of relief when he sent the message back home. No matter the response in a couple of months he would either be reassigned or retired, whichever it was he would finally be leaving this hell hole of an island.

Frustrated with the reports from the Areman colonies, Colonial Minister Wasilewski informed Governor-General Walecha that his resignation was accepted, and that he was to appoint a competent member of his administration as an interim governor while he returned to the capital to explain details of the situation in Arema further and to provide input on potential successor candidates.

"Finally," Sigismund said breathing a sigh of relief as he read the news. He gave a few orders and within an hour he was having a meeting with Ser Kradok. "Admiral, thank you for your quick response. So I just got word back from the Colonial Minister. I am to head back to the capital for a discussion on my resignation and replacement. In the meantime I am to appoint a temporary interim governor. I plan to make that you as the Garrison Commander." He sighed and took a puff of his cigar. "However I know you do not want to be the permanent governor, god I don't blame you."
Kradok would nod solemnly. "Indeed sir. I do not have the political skills to navigate the treacherous waters. However I can certainly hold down the fort until the home office appoints your replacement. Do you have any idea for your replacement?"
"It will have to be a local," Sigismund said thinking. "We are past the time in which someone from Lusatia can effectively get things done. The colonial charter has been totally co-opted. However with a local in charge they might be a bit more flexible." He grimaced. "I do not want to suggest the obvious choices though. They have too much power as it is. Preferably it is someone who can be trusted to remain loyal no matter the circumstances."
"Might I recommend Commander Vonderruhe? While she's not the obvious choice she has served as the Ground Forces Commander for the last several years directly under me, and has connections with the local elites."
Sigismund would stroke his chin thoughtfully. "I see the merit in it. It will be a tough sell, and I don't even really like it. But anyone is better than letting the elites get full control, and at least she is a member of the Lusatian military, as loose of a connection as we might have to that out here. I'll put in the recommendation then as she has your support. However it is out of my hands." He would pour two glasses of rum and offer one to the Admiral. "A toast. To my retirement and your continued service."
Shortly afterwards the Admiral would officially be announced as interim governor general as Sigismund headed back to Lusatia, glad to finally be free from the colonies.

The Colonial Ministry acknowledged and approved of the appointment of the Garrison Commander as an interim appointee and enjoined Sigismund to alert the Colonial Minister to his arrival back in Kazimierzgrad upon his return.
Meanwhile, Colonial Minister Jan Wasilewski had, in fact, narrowed down his preferences to two or three men he had confidence in... and then his real preference, his son-in-law, who had moved through the administrative posts in various government ministries to the point where next on the ladder was a proper regional administrative post, and where better than the out-of-the-way colony of Lusatian Arema. Sure, there were significant problems in Arema, but that just meant his son-in-law couldn't really make things worse by going.
All he had to do was make sure there was no pressing reason to not send Mark. Simple.

Eventually Sigismund would arrive, and inform the Colonial Minister about his arrival. He would also submit his recommendations for who should be appointed as his replacement. While he did recommend the Commander as promised, he also recommended just permanently extending the Admiral at full time Governor General. He would outline his reasoning that the locals were extremely difficult to work with and that the people with the best chance at success in running the colony would be someone who has lived there their whole life. He would prepare for whatever meeting he would have to have, and was also willing to just settle for whatever the Minister wanted, after all, it was no longer his problem.
