The sounds of thousands marching echoed through the streets. Citizens barricaded themselves away within their homes, fashioning themselves with any weapon they could get their hands on to protect their families.

The first of the Rohka army descended from Acrait towards the Mestrian Crownlands. The route they chose took them through Southern Lewharia, one of the least populated areas of the country where they figured they'd meet the least resistance for a swift takeover. It was not the full might of the military, only enough to overwhelm any forces they may encounter.

The troops marched for several days under the cold sun, their carapaces whipped by the freezing wind as the winter set in. Their invasion managed to avoid getting snowed on, making this journey much less arduous for the restless troops as they marched on frozen ground. The leaders avoided moving through towns, trying to keep their soldiers in line and prevent them from going on killing sprees when they haven't even made it to their destination yet.
The checkpoint at the Mestrian border fell in less than an hour. The soldiers saw they were outmarched and immediately bolted for the nearest forts and bases to spread the word, allowing the rebelling army to march straight into the Queendom. The thousands of cockroaches jeered and clicked as they marched through the streets towards the capital. The front of the army marched without issue, while the rear slowly got more and more disorganized as the Rohka were slowly picked off by trailing soldiers.
As the soldiers reached the outskirts of Aererun, they'd move their artillery into position. Only a meager five guns, the generals assumed it'd be more than enough to overwhelm the dated defenses of the city. The city went into full lockdown, police, guards, and soldiers ordering civilians away from the approaching army and into shelters under their homes and businesses.
BOOM
The first shot an artillery cannon would ring through the air, the generals watching the city waiting. Several moments would pass without any indication that something was hit. "Too far. Lower it."
"Not problem, sir."
The general would whip around, staring the communications officer in the eyes before noticing the smoldering cloud rising behind them. There, several Rohka lay dead where the artillery shell detonated within its cannon, the shrapnel of the metal killing the entire crew and wounding several surrounding soldiers. The general simply sighed. "Four more. Fire!"
Three successive booms would follow the command, the shells whistling through the air before striking the city with two massive explosions somewhere on the streets within. The artillery officer would stare with binoculars. "Two yes. One no." They'd spin around to the remaining artillery, the crew still trying to fire it but the shell clearly being a misfire. "One very no..." They'd look back to the others. "Reload!"
The general would raise a blue flag. "Fifteen, fly!" Another couple shots of artillery would ring out as they spoke, making them flinch.
A group of a hundred Rohka would break rank, their loud wings buzzing as they lift off the ground and fly at full speed towards the city, chasing after the shells. At their head, a Rohka with a blue headband would be leading the group. They'd make their way straight for the castle of the Empress, dropping and running on the rooftops to make it harder to hit them by the soldiers on the streets below. Even then, a few of the unarmed in the back would be hit and fall off, dropping from the roofs down to the cobble streets below where they'd be shot again to ensure they're dead.
The Fifteen Group would flutter over the walls, the guards opening fire but not getting closer to them. Overall, security seemed very lax, not that the cockroaches noticed. They'd crowd up against the doorway before breaking it down, the ones on the outside of the pile acting as armor for those on the inside, paying their share of blood for the cause. The group, now down to only a couple dozen, would march through the rather empty halls, some of the Rohka near the back stopping to take in the sights as they made their way to the throne room. To them, all of this was so much more than the mud huts they called home back in Acrait.
The door of the throne room cracked under the weight of the first three Rohka slamming headfirst into the ornate wood doors. A second bash and the door quickly buckled, giving access to the remaining ten soldiers. The blue-banded Rohka would look back, noticing the massive loss of their crew, before turning back to the throne...only for a maid to simply standing by it but no one sitting there. "Where?"
The maid looked at the group, confused as to what she was seeing before her. "The Empress?"
"Yes. Where whore?"
"Watch your tone about the Empress."
One of the younger Rohka would pipe up. "Sorry." The leader would elbow them, shaking his head.
"Where she? Where bitch?"
The maid would throw a glass at the leader, striking him in the forehead and staggering him. "I told you to watch your mouth." She'd recompose herself. "She's not here."
The leader would grip their forehead, steadying themselves while their second-in-command took over. "Then where?"
"She's in the Republic of Koi at the moment."
The group would collectively stare at the maid. "What."
"Mhm. She's out of the country."
The leader would buzz his wings angrily, glaring at the maid. The younger one would pipe up again, looking to the two leaders. "Go home?"
The question would seem to distract the leader as their wings calmed down and they looked to the young one. "Home? We fight."
"Fight none?"
The leader looked back to the empty throne, then back to the private. "...Back line."
The group would stare at each other for a moment before they'd drop their assertive stance and start calming walking back through the halls in which they came. The leader would yank one of the distracted soldiers by the leg, pulling them off a wall. "Back." They'd slowly collect the other soldiers they saw before leaving the building, heading back to the front lines while those who didn't get the memo stayed in the castle distracted.
As soon as the soldiers were out of sight of the maid, she'd let out a heavy sigh. Her eyes darted around the room, all the guards leaning out from their cover and lowering their weapons. "Did...did you just somehow make them go away?"
"They're not smart. I have to deal with them often for the Empress. Distract them and they'll just leave."
"Uh-huh..." They'd think for a moment. "Guess at least she's safe. But we may want to send a telegram immediately and inform them."
"Liddi is already on it."
