Orthoria was holding back the tide.
That in and of itself was a massive achievement, given the state of the government, the armed forces, the political violence and the just narrowly avoided economic collapse. The situation was far from good, but it was somewhat stable. While the army had initially been routed from the border and was losing ground rapidly, a surprising event had managed to restore the morale of many of the soldiers, and indeed, some officers. An event which, under any other circumstance, would have resulted in the total disintegration of order in the capitol and the countryside, and sparked another era of excessive politically-charged violence.
The return of the communists.
Communist guerillas rose up in the east, towards the border with Pomazaniki, infesting the countryside and denying the Oflyans easy access to the lands beyond the mountain range they occupied. The return of the leadership of the Orthorian Union of Communists, at least those that escaped the late Viktor Kirilov's purges, invigorated much of the guerillas into intensifying their actions, allowing the army to withdraw to more favourable positions with less harassment. The Solidarists and Yazov's paramilitary wing of the AGAMM followed in their wake, flocking to the east while allowing the government, the nationalists and some fringe, resurgent monarchist elements to prepare against Oflya in the west, claiming Volgora as their primary stronghold. Pasok, the Sarna region's capitol, had been turned into the stronghold of the eastern guerillas and paramilitaries, as well as the headquarters of army groups which remained in the east to man the frontlines.
While the Yagoda government had no control over what the guerillas did, they made sure to supply them with as much guns as they could spare so that they could do as much damage as possible. The anti-monarchists in particular fought like rats in city streets, ensuring that the enemy bled fiercely whenever they got dragged into urban fighting. But all this would be for nothing if their coastal cities - the capitol included - got shelled into oblivion by the Galran navy. So they hoped beyond hope that the Galran navy would meet its end before it could change focus to the Orthorian thorn in the SU's frontlines.
