Efforts were being made to expand upon and improve the initial designs for the M12 Medium Tank Prototype Wilhelm had brought with him, and such plans were drawn up for a new variant of the tank. Fielding a significantly larger chassis and turret, the T22 Medium as it was dubbed would weigh significantly more than the M12, while simultaneously maintaining a high speed and decreasing the overall surface pressure of the tracks by increasing their width.

Once the issue of ground pressure was resolved, propositions for making the tracks thicker to survive more wear and tear as well as potentially surviving harder hits from hostile fire. Track thickness was increased from 15mm to 35mm, and higher grade steel was to be used to produce them.
