In 1943, a geological ship surveying the Shawbalt reported a bizarre set of events that have now been declassified. According to the report, a private ship called the Blue Maru stumbled onto an island atoll with a structure of some sort built onto it. No record of this atoll or any structure being built by anyone was stated here, a search party went ashore and found it to be some kind of weather research facility of unknown origin. An overnight stay was arranged so they could figure out who built this in the middle of nowhere, at around 4:45 am sudden radio transmissions from the land party to the ship reported phenomena that could not be readily explained. Crew heard voices throughout the building, loud sounds of objects being thrown about and cackling on the top floor. Captain McManus and his first mate armed themselves with bolt action rifles and searched the building believing their were intruders harassing the research party.
McManus wrote in his log that the building was empty and that the second floor was barred heavily and nearly impossible to enter. The next day the research team discovered all the documents in a single room with an attempt to burn them in a trash bin. Again, the language being in common left little answer as to who built the facility. The remaining documents were taken to the main lobby for study and Captain McManus began the process of breaking into the top floor. On the second night, it was reported that gunshots were heard on the top floor. McManus and the first mate broke into the top floor and found it completely empty, signs of gunshots into the walls however were found but had been inflicted years ago according to ballistic evidence. On the final day, the documents initially revealed that the group on the atoll were studying hurricane tracking technology when strange events began bogging them down, unexplained events, team members going mad, and finally people disappearing at night.
It isn't known what happened on the last night of the Blue Maru's stay, just that the crew left in the middle of the night and requested naval support. A UK destroyer assisted the vessel back to UK waters where it docked and revealed that four crew members were missing. Captain McManus stated that an unknown force assaulted the research team and forced them to leave. When asked why four crew members were left, the captain merely stated "They're gone, they got them" when asked who were they, the captain seemed to dodge the question and wanted to avoid the topic. Per this report becoming public, it should be noted that the UK has quarantined the atoll and has a destroyer assigned to keeping naval traffic away from it. It is publicly stated due to keeping maritime lanes open, but the strange events have the UK keeping the atoll isolated and away from anyone who could stumble onto it.
