The History of Nevarra
Before the arrival of the Veraki Empire which played a big role in forming the contemporary culture of Nevarra today, Nevarra was a confederation of nations of nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes as well as influential city-states. Though much of the population existed in thriving agricultural communities along the river banks there were many others that practiced a nomadic lifestyle, travelling across vast reaches of desert either following seasonal cycles and migration or hosting caravans of trade for travelling to neighboring countries. Nevarrans even in their earliest history always had a form of cosmopolitanism, community, and inherent sense of curiosity when it came to others. Travel and trade through the desert and along the river between settlements was very popular and in following the river many merchants found themselves in neighboring nations and returning with goods, customs, and ideas. Though there were minor conflicts and several small-scale wars between communities (often over blood feuds) the Granarha was largely peaceful between the Nevarran nations until the expansion of the Veraki Empire into the southern Granarha.
For Nevarrans this was a time of great unrest as many of the scattered tribes were forced into a northern pocket which they succeeded in preventing further expansion at the cost of Verak then focusing on enforcing the rule in the then Imperial Province of Nevarra. The many tribes that pushed northward at first skirmished both with the Verak and each other as many were exiled from their communities or fled from Veracian rule. Eventually, however, these northern Nevarrans soon came together and organized into another confederation where spiritual leaders of Adhan, Voseante, and pagan tradition as well as, several emirs, and powerful tribes came together and elected the first King of Nevarra; Saulomon, also known as Salamanus or Solomon. During his reign, Saulomon organized the Kingdom of Nevarra and began numerous infrastructural and public works projects within the realm such as fortifying the borders, walling cities, and establishing the capital in Zaira. After his reign came that of his daughter; Queen Kaleeha. During her reign she continued much of the works that her father left behind and was known revising and modernizing the Nevarran code of law, establishing and intricate judicial system while also conducting diplomacy with Verak to prevent northward expansion. Queen Kaleeha was then succeeded by Queen Azahara. who unlike her predecessors, turned her attention outward. Queen Azahara was hostile to the encroaching empire to the south and during his reign was known for organizing the military and pioneering for Nevarra a standing army which owed its allegiance to the nation. Though Queen Azahara spent his reign preparing for war she would succumb to wounds not long after an attempted assassination on her life, naming her son; Hector as her successor. King Hector, The Lion of Nevarra, during his reign would continue the traditions of his mother and kept strong support of the military.
At this point in time the Veraki empire showed signs of weakness. An overstretched administration, a draconic and crumbling bureaucracy, an admittedly titanic army stretched still stretched thinly across the realm, all of these factors would contribute in aiding the opportunistic perspective of the provinces it had subjugated and fiercely held. With the mistreatment of populations in other provinces that were not completely Veracian, the embers of nationalism and popular sovereignty were stoked and flames of rebellion burnt across the empire aided by enterprising nation-states and imperial provinces seeking their liberty from the burgeoning imperium. To the Nevarrans this period became known as the "Reconquista" where King Hector with the aid of his standing army and alliances struck with interior provinces waged a series of campaigns against Verak, claiming more and more of the land formerly ruled by the Nevarran peoples until Verak was largely pushed out of the Granarha interior. To the people, Hector was heralded as a liberator and conqueror but to those who were sympathetic or aligned themselves with the dying imperium he was known as cruel and vengeful man, having earned the monkier: "The Bloody" from his ruthlessness towards the unrepentant loyalists. Surprisingly, despite generations having passed under imperial rule many Nevarrans kept the customs of their predecessors, albeit adopting a lot from the culture of Verak but always topping their innovations with Nevarran flair. After the conquests and consolidation of the realm Hector ruled for a number of years before abdicating the throne to pursue personal scholastic interests and leaving the throne to his son; Zahayr
The reign of King Zahayr and the rulers and dynasties that followed him became a period of peace and short-turmoil, marking a period known as the Nevarran Renaissance where generations were spent revitalizing Nevarran culture and reconciling distinctions that formed between Nevarrans when the nation was divided in two. During this time Nevarra became a nation of arts and humanities, sciences, and other mediums of learning now having the ability to both look inward and explore the nuances of their culture and also look outward and study the natural world and the stars beyond. Paintings, poems, books, music, architecture, Nevarrans exploded with curiosity towards themselves and the world around them. Those from other nations began to become attracted to Nevarra and its innovations and likewise as people began to move through their lands bringing both trade and customs Nevarra became equally fascinated with a world that got so much larger than just worrying about the former empire to their south. During the Nevarran Renaissance the nation focused much more on diplomatic affairs and development, often repurposing the architecture and technologies left behind to help themselves catch up with its neighbors.
Throughout the era and even beyond it Nevarra remained mostly at peace and did its best to at the very least encourage neutrality between itself and other nations. Though Nevarra had been called to arms at other points during this period these conflicts were few and far between with the nation. Nevarra didn't pride itself in meddling in the affairs and conflicts of other nations and chose largely to remain neutral in conflicts that didn't threaten their own sovereignty. Through alliances and trade deals, however, Nevarra may have answered the call to arms numerous times but more often than not the nation did its best to maintain its lasting peace. By the time of the Industrial Revolution and the discovery of the inherit value of Staol, Nevarra became one of the first nations to adopt its wide-scale usage in various industries and numerous economic edicts produced by the nation has allowed the mass transit of the valuable fuel from its land to various nation-states in the south.
In the modern day, Nevarra has shifted from being a feudal monarchy to one that struggles to decide whether it is absolute or more constitutional. Surrounded by neighbors that are more democratically aligned Nevarra stands out among the nations in the south as a power that is still deciding the power of monarchs that have ruled the desert nation since ancient eras. The monopolized influence of the nobility within the government has largely waned as the lords and ladies of Nevarra take a back seat. Instead, the rising middle-class population vanguard as the most politically invested group with numerous partisan factions forming. Many loyal to the crown and continually acknowledging the sovereignty of the royals, others more moderately accommodating the monarchy while also seeking to ratify a proper constitution, and then others who radically embrace democratic and republic values believing that the nation is behind ideologically and that moving forward must come with embracing the more egalitarian ideals of Nevarra's many neighbors. Only time will tell what will come of Nevarra.
