Marrish troops continued to hold their sectors with fervor. They fought with no sense of decorum, their battle was one of pure survival and it showed. Battle weariness and fatigue effected every man or woman on the front, regardless of cycling at this rate. The stress of not only your homes in the hands of those who would see you dead, but the capital of your homeland laid siege weighed heavy on the MAF's shoulders. The news of the draft put a mix of emotions in many's heads. Would they sacrifice everything that made them for victory? Their values, taboos, their ideas of right and wrong? Maybe. But one thing would be certain despite these thoughts.
Marrish Marine shocktrooper taking a break at the entrance of an improvised 'bunker house'. His gaze unfocused but determined.
They would not buckle or break.
The Bay:
With the support of the Nevarran coast guard, Marrlan's naval vessels continued to thunder on their chorus in support of all ground elements, focusing on the city primarily to slow the inevitable advance to the Pionares house.
The Air:
Marrlan's airforce continued to gain well deserved experienced thwarting whatever threat came to the plate. While some would be prideful, their arrogance was quickly curtailed by their peers and leaders. The last thing they needed were arrogant mistakes, let alone the extra humbling of the constant view of what happened below them. Tern bombers were escorted by all available CAP aircraft to begin bombing of enemy forces on the flanks to give some relief to CoN forces and soften up Grinvels armor. Having done nothing but sat there, the 8 Flying Boats in the AO left to be redeployed to the Marrish Naval efforts in the Attleminster sea along with 2 recon Tri-planes and 5 Recon biplanes.
The Flanks:
With air and artillery supporting them both Eastern and Western flanks settled in for the long game trying to keep Grinvels forces at bay not giving an inch. Further development of trench optimization would continue. Wide trench complexes remained in areas of importance that could not afford any less, but smaller scouting positions or outlying areas used smaller slit trenches, big enough for roughly 3-4 men or began digging 'crab burrows' as they were affectionately named. A small fighting positions big enough for 2 troops to engage from a defended position in the ground not connected to any network, dispersing troops over an area and mitigating casualties from bombardment or bombing, but also affording them much better concealment from air elements especially if camouflaged well. Ambush positions made of single troop dugouts were made with a camouflaged trap door, when enemy troops passed by, the entrenched soldier would pop out and engage from an unexpected angle. These positions were placed at the edge of brush where they could be obscured by brush as well, adding to their effectiveness and the disorientation of another axis of engagement from an unknown, and difficult to spot, contact.
The City:
The sewers continued to be used as a highway for undetected transport around the city as Grinvel made their advances. If they did not collapse a tunnel or seal a manhole, Marrish troops would use them to continue and exploit their advances. Within their own dominated networks manholes deemed not tactically viable were sealed and reinforced by engineer teams. Hopefully allowing total access unimpeded.
Forces on the surface continued to use scorched earth tactics as much as they could. A constant fighting retreat into improvised fortress houses and buildings continued in an attempt to attrition Grinvel as much as possible before they reached their prize. Marine shocktroops armed with submachine guns and shotguns would continue to harry Grinvelian troops with their walker raid parties in the concrete jungle alongside the maneuvering infantry assisting the Nevarrans harrasing efforts. Marrish forces continued to use the verticality of the city to their advantage for AT rifles, AT grenades, .50 cal machine gun positions and other anti anything setup a soldier could think of. Every highrise a fighting position. Every street or alley a protracted engagement that required building clears or artillery bombardment to silence. The unstoppable force of Grinvel met Marrlans immovable object.
Marrish artillery continued to do counter battery fire and some field guns were rolled into place in defensive positions to provide direct fire support where tanks were already allocated to other areas. Marrish armor on the otherhand began to act as mobile cover for small infantry counter attacks. Medium tanks would fire smoke shells to obscure their approach before following up with HE and rolling to to provide cover for infantry, then just as fast as they arrived pulling attention, they would retreat. The Canner's well thought out transmission letting it reach up to 15MPH in reverse to quickly pull out of an area with infantry hopping onto the engine deck as they rolled away under smoke cover. Heavy tanks continued to bring the heavier pain as they locked areas and streets down with their large guns and heavy armor forcing Grinvel to reassess their routes of engagement or bring their own armor to bear in a city marred by impassable rubble and open flame so hot that tank crews would cook themselves.
The House:
Preparation's were made as best as possible. With the Senate and Pionare all refusing to leave, outright stating they would be fighting, the Marrish Praestes (500 Elite Guard Platoon) accompanying Nevarran Rangers and Beast Hunters assigned for security readied themselves within the capital building. A much more modest building than what could be assumed for a place of such importance. Constructed in the style of a traditional Marrish great house (home for up 3 families comfortably) with minor alterations. The building is constructed of both stone and concrete with a tan, brown, and grey paint. A plaque to the left of the main entrance doors read:
"A government divided by barriers and petty regality is not bound to itself. A family cannot preside outside of its own house, a government cannot be separate in such intimate matters by opulence."
The flags that are raised high, before the war, were replaced monthly to symbolize the ever changing and fresh republic. The cities many local textile firms were always tapped for their creation over larger companies as a way to remember the republics roots. Now the flag flutters with its edges frayed, 3 stray bullet holes break its former pristine condition along with some dirt kicked up by ever closer explosions tossing ejecta and debris far. Despite this, it continues to wave in defiance. That defiance, is what all within the building cling to. The senators and the Pionare herself have all donned their old uniforms. Both blending them, and making them stick out just enough beyond their faces to tell who they are. The Pionare watched on from the guard embrasure on the front of the building as troops in front of the building hurried about bringing supplies in or shoring up defenses around the building itself. Field guns were rolled into defensive positions around the building to fulfill a direct fire role. If any Jaegers were conducting recon on the building, a large figure would be seen talking to multiple Beast Hunters and Praestes occasionally. Giving orders or overseeing work before slipping out of sight within the house.
